Yamunotri and Gangotri are two sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand, India, revered as the sources of the Yamuna and Ganga rivers respectively. They are part of the larger Char Dham pilgrimage circuit and are known for their stunning Himalayan scenery and spiritual significance.
Yamunotri:
*Located at an altitude of 3,293 meters, Yamunotri is the westernmost shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas.
*It is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna and is the source of the Yamuna River, considered the second most sacred river in India.
*The main attraction is the Yamunotri Temple, dedicated to the goddess Yamuna, which is reached via a trek from Janki Chatti.
*The actual source is the Champasar glacier, a difficult-to-access glacial lake.
Gangotri:
Located at an elevation of 3,100 meters, Gangotri is the source of the Ganga (Ganges) River.
The town is known for the Gangotri Temple, a 18th-century structure dedicated to the goddess Ganga.
According to legend, Gangotri is the place where King Bhagirath performed penance to bring the river Ganga down from heaven.
The Bhagirathi River flows through Gangotri, and the area is known for its scenic beauty and peaceful atmosphere.
